Whether you’re excited about the future of cordless mowers or still considering moving from gas, there are plenty of alternatives to what you use daily (even if it’s corded!) with your lawn care. The following electric mowers have been pulled from reviews, features, and best-selling options.
This has been mentioned a couple of times on the Lawnaholic blog, but I’ll say it again. Who isn’t a big fan of maintenance free equipment for your yard? Plus, with the added option of using batteries for multiple tools (and some tools coming with an added charger), the only thing to do is charge them once you’re finished.
Benefits of an Electric Cordless Mower vs. Corded
There’s always pros and cons of comparing two similar types of equipment, but you might find that in this case, going with a cordless model is worth the advantages. Most of us are inclined to finding good habits with charging technology anyway.
Convenient and Cord-Free
It’s one thing with a vacuum to run over the cord by accident, but what happens when an electrical cord is run over by a mower? You can answer that question. This is where both convenience and no-hassle comes into play. With a cordless mower, you don’t have to track, pull, or even worry about where the cord is. Simple put the battery in and you’re good to go!
Reduced Risk of Electric Shock
Your kids (if you have them) will love you even more because they’ll be able to run around the yard without the possibility of tripping. Plus, the risk of electric shock is reduced if there happens to be a split in the line. That’s a big deal in my book.
When plugged into a 120V outlet, the range of power can vary from 108-130V or even outside those numbers. With that amount of voltage, when using a corded mower, the output is constantly being used. With a 40V, 56V, or similar cordless electric mower, it’s regulated by the battery, so 30 minutes with 40V is less than 30 minutes with 120V.
Considering these benefits, here is our Top 5 List for Cordless Mowers. Take a look at the pros and cons of each to see if they might be a good fit for your environment!
Sun Joe iON16LM 40V (Brushless) Cordless Mower, 16″
👍 Brushless motor
👍 Perfect for small lawns
👎 2-year warranty
👎 16″ cutting width
👎 No mulch plug, small bag
You might know the Snow Joe brand from some of the best electric snow blowers on the market. They have dripped their way into the electric mower line. Their 40V mower even offers a hybrid alternative (see bottom of post) that allows for both cordless and corded operation.
Keep in mind with the Sun Joe iON16LM it only has a 16″ deck cutting width.
BLACK+DECKER CM2040 40V Cordless Mower, 20″
👍 EDGEMAX cuts
👍 15 gallon collection bag
👍 Side discharge
👎 2-year limited warranty
👎 Autosense technology
👎 Designed for 1/4 acre yard
First off, this model comes with two (2) 2.5Ah lithium batteries. Compared with the Greenworks — small bias here 😉 — that’s 1.5Ah less. That shouldn’t matter too much because you’ll save power with the Autosense technology (adjusts power as it mows) and get the advantage of up-to-the-edge mowing.
The BLACK+DECKER CM2040 comes with what’s called EDGEMAX. It’s innovative and only offered on this electric mower. I guess everyone needs to stand out somehow, right?
Even though I love the Greenworks string trimmer, saving time with yard work is never really a complaint. Unless, it’s such a nice day that being inside sounds boring.
You can use the edging feature to get around fences, landscapes, and flower beds to achieve the clean, manicured lawn look. Plus, with the 15 gallon nylon collection bag, grass clippings will stay out of way.
I decided to add the Autosense technology into the cons section because there are many reviews – read them here – talking about the downside of mowing with thick grass. Although this could be just a poor performing motor, it seems like it affects battery life significantly.
Overall, the BLACK+DECKER CM2040 mower seems to offer good features, but with the short warranty, it’s lower in the list.
What’s in the CM2040’s Box?
- CM2040 20″ MOWER
- (2) 2.5Ah – 40V MAX LITHIUM BATTERIES
- (1) GRASS BAG
- (1) CHARGER
WORX WG772 56V Cordless Mower, 19″
👍 Safety Starting Key
👍 Quick Connect Washout Port
👍 Dial for POWER or ECO modes
👎 19 inch cutting width
👎 2 year warranty (register for extra year)
👎 Long battery charge time
Worx includes 2 batteries and a charger with their equivalent model. There are two features that the Worx WG772 boasts: Intellicut and NutriCut™. Both are used to help with running an electric version of a motor. There’s also a dial that allows for a quick change from more power or an eco setting.
A feature known as Intellicut is what sets the Worx WG772 apart from other electric mowers. It is a torque-on-demand system that adjusts when the mower needs more torque. Are you cutting taller or thicker grass? The mower will not bog down.
The NutriCut™ mulching blade helps by cutting up grass into small clippings that are dispersed throughout the yard. Your soil will be happy and healthier because it will receive nutrients (naturally) for growth and your yard will be less likely to need chemical fertilizers.
Once you’re done mowing, when it comes time to clean out the underside, there’s a quick connect washout port that allows for easy clean-up!
What’s in the WG772’s Box?
- (1) 56V CORDLESS LAWN MOWER
- (2) 56V MAXLITHIUM BATTERY
- (1) 56V CHARGER
- (1) GRASS COLLECTION BAG
- (1) MULCH PLUG
- (1) SIDE-DISCHARGE CHUTE
An advantage Worx has with this model is the 56V batteries. You’ll get two of them and they mow about 8,500 square feet on a single charge. That’s 1300 more feet than a full-size tennis court. With the extra voltage, you can expect a longer wait time for a recharge.
The Worx tools lineup comes with a 2 year standard warranty and you’ll have to register your product to take advantage of the extra year (total of 3 years). If you’re not satisfied with the tool, you can request a return/refund within 30 days.
Greenworks 25302 40V G-MAX Electric Mower, 20″
👍 Holds 2 batteries
👍 Share batteries with other tools
👎 Auto Power
👎 Not great for really tall grass
👎 Does not easily fold for travel
The Amazon model comes with two batteries and a charger. You’ll receive (1) 4Ah battery and (1) 2Ah battery.
One of the first things I wondered about when using the Greenworks electric mower was the battery run-time. If I was going to switch from a gas mower to an electric, I wanted to make sure I wouldn’t be without power. With the gas mower, I can always add more gas, but with a battery I’d have to wait for them to recharge.
Battery charge time for the 2Ah battery is 60 minutes. For the 4Ah battery, you’re looking at about double the wait time — about 120 minutes. After the charge, expect up to 70 minutes of run-time on a single charge. Each battery has an indicator on it to show how much life is left.
Greenworks has both a 16″ deck version and a 19″ deck. Prices are according to the size of the deck, but for the cost, you’ll be better off moving to a 20″ from the 19″ model just because of the small difference in cost.
Greenworks has something called Smart Cut Technology. With the dual blades, you’ll get a better cut quality, a mulching option, and bagging (if you really want it). Plus, the mower has an automatic energy saving function that increases or decreases the amount of power being pulled from the batteries. Once one of the batteries is out of power, it will automatically switch over the next battery.
One big difference with the 25302 model is that it is actually 41% lighter when compared to other gas tools.
The mower has an instant electric start. That means no gas, no pull cords, and no maintenance, you’ll definitely be happy with the Greenworks gas alternative mower.
Another added benefit from the Greenworks line is that you’ll be able to use one G-MAX battery across their entire lineup of power tools. They have the industry’s largest 40V system. That means string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and a ton of other equipment to get anything you need done outside.
What’s in the 25302’s Box?
- (1) 40V Greenworks 25302 40V Cordless Mower
- (1) 40V 4Ah G-MAX Battery
- (1) 40V 2Ah G-MAX Battery
- (1) Collection Bag
There’s a 4-year warranty on equipment and 2-years on batteries. I’m comfortable with knowing the electric mower is covered for that long should I need service.
EGO Power+ 56V Electric Cordless Mower, 20″
👍 Folds quickly for storage
👍 30-min rapid charger
👍 LED Headlights
👎 Heavy ~ 65 lbs.
👎 Price point is higher than average
👎 Only holds one battery
Right off the bat, research on the EGO brand shows that they are consistent about quality and customer service.
They go big with a 5 year warranty on their equipment! (See below this mower for the complete warranty details.) The warranty covers free repair for any defective products (including commercial use of one year) after normal use.
Compared to the Greenworks warranty of 4 years, that’s pretty impressive.
One of the best features of the EGO Power Plus cordless mower is the ability to run a 7.5Ah battery. That means on a single battery, up to 90 minutes cut time. The mower battery has Arc Lithium™ technology that is compatible with all EGO Power+ equipment and chargers.
Direct from EGO: The battery run time exceeds the charge time!
Right out of the box, simply place the battery in the compartment and press the green start button.
The wheel adjustments on the mower are made with one lever versus having to change the height of each wheel individually.
Another advantage of the compact, folding ability is for cleaning. It can help if you’re using a smaller storage shed without a garage. Simply fold up the mower, prop it up and clean the underside.
It’s considered a 3-in-1 feature mower since it offers mulching, bagging, and side discharge capabilities.
EGO Power Plus Warranty
EGO Power Equipment has a 5 year limited warranty. Battery packs and chargers carry a 3 year limited warranty.
From the EGO Power Plus website:
For warranty service, please contact EGO customer service toll-free at 1-855-EGO-5656. When requesting warranty service, you must present the original dated sales receipt. An authorized service center will be selected to repair the product according to the stated warranty terms.
Not in Top 5 List – Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB 40V
Although this electric mower didn’t make the top 5 list (because it isn’t 100% cordless), I wanted to add it because maybe you are the type of person that would enjoy the flexibility of plug-and-play along with a cordless battery.
The weight of the Sun Joe iON16LM-HYB is a tad heavier than it’s counterpart, but offers a more powerful motor (780W brushless) because of the 6.5 amp electric capability. This does, however, affect the max runtime of the cordless battery. The battery has a max runtime of 25 minutes.
Price-wise — expect to pay close to $100 more, but for removing the hassle of waiting for a battery to charge, it might be worth it.
Last thing to mention was about getting a mower setup. For those out there that aren’t quite the DIY type, there are services out there that will help with the setup, install, and configuration of equipment you purchase.
Amazon is now running something called Amazon Home Services. They have all kinds of services for your home including smart home services, yard & outdoors, home improvement, and other consultation and cleaning services. For example, get free estimates if you need a riding lawn mower setup.
On a side note, have you seen the Ryobi Electric Riding Lawn Mower? It’s going to be winner for those looking to move away from their gas riding mowers!

That’s it for this one! Take care of you, and your lawn. 🙂
